The Hyvä Theme is open source, while Hyvä’s other products are commercially licensed. Hyvä relicensed the core theme under OSL 3.0 and AFL 3.0 on November 10, 2025, with version 1.4.0. Magento Open Source uses the same two licenses. Hyvä UI, Hyvä Checkout, Hyvä Enterprise, and Hyvä Commerce still require payment.

Before that change, a Hyvä Theme license cost €1,000 per Magento installation. Articles that still list this fee are out of date.

What does Hyvä’s open source license allow?

Hyvä’s open source license lets you use, modify, and redistribute the Hyvä Theme without paying Hyvä. Per Hyvä’s announcement, the code sits on GitHub. Free Composer keys for Packagist come from the Hyvä Portal.

Hyvä’s license terms put the Hyvä Theme under AFL 3.0 and its helper modules under OSL 3.0. Most customization happens in child themes, so the OSL side rarely comes up.

  • Child themes and template overrides fall under AFL, which asks very little of you.
  • Editing a Hyvä helper module’s own code brings in OSL. It’s a copyleft license, so your changed module has to stay under OSL.
  • You need Hyvä’s written permission to promote your own theme with the Hyvä Themes name.

Which Hyvä products are still paid?

Four Hyvä products still require payment: Hyvä UI, Hyvä Checkout, Hyvä Enterprise, and Hyvä Commerce.

What does a Hyvä project cost now that the theme is free?

With the Hyvä Theme free, build time is now the main cost of a Hyvä project. Someone has to build or migrate the theme, which is the work our Hyvä theme development team handles. Any extension that outputs something on the storefront also has to be Hyvä compatible, either from its vendor or through a compatibility module. If your Adobe Commerce store relies on features like B2B, add Hyvä Enterprise to the budget.
