How do I get access to Hyvä?

You get access to Hyvä Theme (often searched as “Hyva”) through a free license key from hyva.io. Hyvä stopped charging for the theme on November 10, 2025, when it relicensed it under OSL 3.0 and AFL 3.0, so all you need is an account, a supported Magento install, and a couple of Composer commands. Hyvä Theme itself is a Magento 2 frontend built on Tailwind CSS and Alpine.js that replaces the default Luma theme.

Quick answer

Hyvä Theme has been free since November 10, 2025. To access it, sign up at hyva.io, add a free Hyvä Theme license in the Hyvä Portal, and enter your store’s domain. Add the token and repository URL from the portal to your Magento project with Composer, then install hyva-themes/magento2-default-theme. Individual accounts get up to 5 free keys. Hyvä UI, Checkout, Commerce, and Enterprise are still paid.

What does my store need before installing Hyvä?

Hyvä Theme needs a recent Magento 2 release, PHP 8.1 or higher, and Node.js 20 or newer. Check these against Hyvä’s installation docs before you create anything:

  • Magento 2.4.4-p9, 2.4.5-p8, 2.4.6-p7, 2.4.7-p1, or any later release.
  • PHP 8.1 or higher, which rules out stores still running PHP 7.4.
  • Node.js 20 or newer wherever you build the frontend, because Hyvä compiles its styles with Tailwind CSS.

How do I get a free Hyvä license key and install the theme?

Getting Hyvä Theme takes five steps: create an account, claim a free license key, connect Composer, install the package, and switch your store’s theme.

  1. Sign up at hyva.io: Registering drops you into the Hyvä Portal. Every Hyvä license you own, free or paid, lives here from now on.
  2. Claim your free license key: Add a license and pick the free Hyvä Theme option. The portal asks for a domain name, so have your store’s domain ready. Individual accounts can hold up to 5 free keys, and Hyvä may revoke keys that sit unused for a long time.
  3. Point Composer at Hyvä’s repository: Run these from your Magento root, swapping in the token and project name the portal shows you.
composer config --auth http-basic.hyva-themes.repo.packagist.com token yourLicenseAuthenticationKey
    composer config repositories.private-packagist composer https://hyva-themes.repo.packagist.com/yourProjectName/
The first command saves your token in auth.json. Hyvä says never to commit these credentials to a public repository, so check your .gitignore before you push.
  4. Install the theme:
    composer require hyva-themes/magento2-default-theme
    bin/magento setup:upgrade
  5. Switch your store to Hyvä: In the admin, open Content > Design > Configuration, choose the Hyvä theme for your store view, and flush the cache.

What if Composer can’t find the Hyvä package?

If Composer can’t find the Hyvä Theme package, check your repository URL first. It has to match https://hyva-themes.repo.packagist.com/yourProjectName/ exactly. Hyvä’s troubleshooting page also warns that repo.hyva.io isn’t a real host, even though AI tools keep suggesting it. If the URL checks out, your token probably never made it into auth.json.

While you’re at it, build Tailwind on development or staging. Hyvä advises against compiling it on production.

Should the merchant or the agency own the Hyvä license key?

The merchant should own the Hyvä license key. Hyvä ties each key and repository URL to a license, and that license sits in whoever’s account created it. If your agency sets Hyvä up under its own account, your store’s Composer install depends on an account you don’t control.

Create the license in your own Hyvä account and share credentials only with the developers working on the project. Already handed it to an agency? A license owner can transfer all licenses for a domain to another person, so ask them to move it to you.

Can I get Hyvä from GitHub without an account?

Yes, you can get Hyvä Theme from GitHub without an account. The default theme repository is public and free to clone. Installing through Composer still needs a license key, though, and the key also gets you Hyvä’s compatibility modules for third-party extensions. For a live store, get the key.

Which Hyvä products are free and which are paid?

Only Hyvä Theme is free. The rest of Hyvä’s product line is sold separately, according to Hyvä’s license page.

ProductCostNotes
Hyvä ThemeFreeOpen source, commercial use allowed, community support on Hyvä’s Slack
Hyvä UI€250 one-offComponent library, bought separately from the theme

Once the key is in place, the install itself is rarely what slows a project down. If you’re moving an existing Luma store, budget your time for extension compatibility and template rebuilds. Check each installed extension against Hyvä’s compatibility modules before promising anyone a launch date.
