Does Hyvä work with Magento Open Source?
Yes. The base Hyvä Theme runs on Magento Open Source with no Adobe Commerce dependency. The core Hyvä Theme has also been free since November 10, 2025. Per Hyvä’s open source announcement, the theme ships under OSL 3.0 and AFL 3.0, matching Magento Open Source. You install Hyvä Theme with Composer using a key from your hyva.io account.
Quick answer
Hyvä Theme supports Magento Open Source 2.4.4-p9, 2.4.5-p8, 2.4.6-p7, 2.4.7-p1 and later. Your server needs PHP 8.1 to 8.4. The Hyvä Theme itself is free, while Hyvä UI, Hyvä Checkout, Hyvä Commerce and Hyvä Enterprise are paid. Magento extensions with their own storefront JavaScript need a Hyvä compatibility module.
What you need to install Hyvä on Magento Open Source
Your exact patch release matters, since Hyvä sets a floor for each 2.4.x line. The current Hyvä Theme release, needs the following, according to Hyvä’s installation docs:
- Magento 2.4.4-p9, 2.4.5-p8, 2.4.6-p7, 2.4.7-p1 or any later release.
- PHP 8.1, 8.2, 8.3 or 8.4. Hyvä no longer supports PHP 7.4 as of 2026.
- Node.js 20 or newer on your development or staging machine to compile Tailwind CSS.
- A free Hyvä Packagist key, created from your hyva.io dashboard.
Stores on an older 2.4.x patch can still run Hyvä versions before 1.3.11. Hyvä 1.3.11 added a requirement for the CSP nonce provider, which only exists from Magento 2.4.4. Upgrading your patch level is the better route. Pinning an old Hyvä release also locks you out of later fixes and features.
Which Hyvä products are still paid?
The free Hyvä Theme release covers the theme and its support modules. Here is how the Hyvä product line splits
| Product | License | Who needs it |
|---|---|---|
| Hyvä Theme | Free (OSL 3.0 and AFL 3.0) | Any Magento Open Source or Adobe Commerce store |
| Hyvä UI | Paid, one-off | Teams that want Hyvä’s ready-made component library |
| Hyvä Checkout | Paid | Stores replacing the default Magento checkout |
| Hyvä Commerce | Paid | Magento Open Source stores that want the full Hyvä suite |
| Hyvä Enterprise | Paid | Adobe Commerce stores only, for B2B, Live Search and Product Recommendations |
Where Hyvä compatibility breaks on Magento Open Source
- Third-party extensions: Alpine.js and Tailwind CSS replace Luma’s RequireJS and Knockout.js layer. Extensions that add storefront features, such as layered navigation or one-step checkouts, need a Hyvä compatibility module. Check the vendor’s Hyvä support before you plan the switch.
- Legacy captcha: Magento’s built-in captcha breaks forms on Hyvä, so switch to one of Magento’s Google reCAPTCHA options.
- Disabled GraphQL modules: Some storefront features call Magento’s GraphQL API. If you switched off GraphQL modules while on Luma, check which ones Hyvä needs. The full list in Hyvä’s installation docs includes

How to check if your Magento store is ready for Hyvä
For most Magento Open Source stores, the real question is migration effort rather than compatibility. Start with your patch level and PHP version. Then audit your extension list for Hyvä support before you commit to a timeline. Our Hyvä theme development team can review your setup if you want help scoping that work.
