Hyvä Answers
Hyvä is a frontend for Magento 2 and Adobe Commerce, built on Tailwind CSS and Alpine.js, and this library covers the questions that come up when you actually build on it: migrating off Luma, working out which extensions will break, customising Hyvä Checkout, working with Hyvä UI components, and diagnosing a Hyvä store that is still slow after launch. Answers come from Stagebit engineers doing Magento frontend work. Where Hyvä's own documentation answers something better than we can, we link to it rather than repeating it.
Hyvä basics and product orientation
- Hyvä is a frontend theme for Magento 2 and Adobe Commerce that replaces the default Luma stack (RequireJS, KnockoutJS, jQuery, and LESS) with server rendered Magento templates styled in Tailwind CSS and made interactive with Alpine.js. It has been free and open source since November 2025 under the OSL 3.0 and AFL 3.0 licenses, the same dual license Magento Open Source uses, with paid add-ons like Hyvä Checkout and Hyvä UI sold separately. The result is a much lighter frontend that loads and renders faster than stock Luma, without changing how Magento’s backend, catalog, or checkout logic works underneath.
- Hyvä is technically a Magento 2 theme, since you install it the same way you install any storefront theme. But it also functions as a frontend framework, because it replaces Magento’s entire rendering stack, Knockout.js, RequireJS, jQuery, and LESS, with Tailwind CSS and Alpine.js. The core Hyvä Theme has been free and open source under OSL 3.0 and AFL 3.0 since November 2025, while paid add-ons like Hyvä Checkout and Hyvä Commerce sit on top of it.
- Hyvä is faster than Luma because it replaces Luma’s RequireJS module loader, Knockout.js view-models, and jQuery-based UI widgets with Alpine.js, and swaps Luma’s LESS-based stylesheet system for Tailwind CSS compiled ahead of time. This cuts the number of JavaScript files a browser has to download and parse on every page and removes most of the client-side templating overhead Luma depends on. The result is fewer render-blocking resources and a shorter Time to Interactive, which is why Hyvä stores consistently score higher on Core Web Vitals than a stock Luma storefront.
- Hyvä uses Tailwind CSS for all styling and Alpine.js for JavaScript interactivity. It replaces Magento’s default Luma theme stack, which relies on LESS, RequireJS, Knockout.js, and UI components. The result is a much smaller, faster frontend that standard web developers can work with directly, without needing deep Magento-specific frontend knowledge.
- Magewire is an open source, MIT licensed port of Laravel Livewire built for Magento 2 and Adobe Commerce. It lets a PHP component update its own template through an Ajax request, without writing custom JavaScript. Hyvä Checkout is built on Magewire because it fits Hyvä’s approach of doing reactive UI work in PHP and Alpine.js instead of a heavy framework like Knockout.js or React.
- Hyvä UI is a paid library of prebuilt, ready-to-use storefront components, things like product galleries, cart drawers, menus, and banners, that plug into a Hyvä Theme build. Hyvä Theme is the actual frontend framework, built with Tailwind CSS and Alpine.js, that replaces Magento’s Luma theme. Hyvä Theme is free and open source; Hyvä UI is a separate one-time paid add-on that speeds up building on top of it. You need Hyvä Theme to have a storefront at all. Hyvä UI is optional.
- Hyvä Checkout vs Hyvä Theme is a common mix-up in Magento projects, but they are two separate products, not two names for the same thing. Hyvä Theme is the free, open source Magento 2 frontend built on Tailwind CSS and Alpine.js, free since November 2025. Hyvä Checkout costs €1,000 as a one-time license, is built on Magewire, and replaces Magento’s default checkout instead of the storefront theme. That license includes a free Hyvä Theme license and can even run in Theme Fallback mode on stores that are not using Hyvä Theme at all.
- Hyvä Enterprise is Hyvä’s commercial license for Adobe Commerce stores, bundling B2B support, Adobe Sensei services (Live Search, Product Recommendations, Data Connection), and premium support into one product. As of July 1, 2026 it costs €7,500 for the first year and €5,000 per year after that, covering one production installation with unlimited storeviews and staging environments. It is built for merchants running Adobe Commerce, not Magento Open Source or Mage-OS, which use the separate Hyvä Commerce suite instead.
- Hyvä Commerce costs €3,000 a year, about €250 a month, and bundles Hyvä Theme, Hyvä Checkout, Hyvä UI, Hyvä CMS, an Admin Dashboard, an Image Editor and Media Optimisation into one license for a single Magento Open Source installation, with unlimited storeviews and domains. Hyvä Theme itself has been free and open source since November 2025. Hyvä UI and Hyvä Checkout still sell as separate paid products for merchants who don’t want the full bundle, and Adobe Commerce runs on Hyvä Enterprise instead, since Hyvä Commerce doesn’t work on that platform.
- Hyvä is a Finnish word meaning good, with secondary senses of desirable and advisable. It’s pronounced roughly HUU-vä, with the y sounding like the German ü or French u rather than an English oo, and the ä sounding like the a in cat. Magento’s Hyvä theme was named after the word by founder Willem Wigman as a statement of intent: to build a genuinely good, lightweight frontend for Magento stores.
- Hyvä theme was created in 2020 by Dutch Magento developer Willem Wigman, as a faster alternative to Magento’s default Luma frontend. Today it’s maintained by the company he founded, hyva.io, with Vinai Kopp serving as Technical Director and Partner, plus a network of certified partner agencies. Hyvä Theme became free and open source in November 2025 under OSL3 and AFL3 licensing. In July 2025, the same company launched Hyvä Commerce, a broader platform adding checkout, CMS, and admin panel tools on top of the original theme.
- Hyvä offers two official demos: the Hyvä Theme demo at demo.hyva.io and a separate Hyvä Checkout demo linked from the Hyvä Checkout product page. Partner agencies and extension vendors also run Hyvä demo stores, some with Magento admin access. All of them use sample data, so none can show how your own extensions and catalog will behave on Hyvä.
- Since November 10, 2025, the core Hyvä Theme has been free and open source under OSL 3.0 and AFL 3.0. You can use, modify, and redistribute it on commercial Magento 2 stores without a license fee. Hyvä UI (€250 one-off), Hyvä Checkout, Hyvä Enterprise, and Hyvä Commerce stay commercially licensed.
- Hyvä Theme has been free and open source since November 10, 2025, under OSL 3.0 and AFL 3.0. Create an account at hyva.io, claim a free license key from your dashboard, then install hyva-themes/magento2-default-theme with Composer. Individuals can hold up to 5 free keys and partner agencies up to 50. Hyvä UI, Hyvä Checkout, Hyvä Enterprise, and Hyvä Commerce remain commercial products.
- Hyvä gives no evaluation access to Hyvä Checkout, Hyvä Commerce, Hyvä Enterprise, or Hyvä UI. Hyvä Theme is free under OSL 3.0 and AFL 3.0, and a hyva.io account holds up to 5 free Composer keys (50 for partner agencies). Every paid Hyvä license covers unlimited staging and development environments for one business, and first-time purchases can be refunded within 30 days.
- Hyvä Theme has been free and open source since 10 November 2025, so no one pays a theme license. Hyvä UI (€250 one-off), Hyvä Checkout, Hyvä Commerce and Hyvä Enterprise still need paid licenses, each covering one Magento installation for one business. The merchant should fund these and hold them in its own Hyvä account, even if the agency buys first and transfers them.
- Paid Hyvä licenses cover one production Magento installation, including its store views, same-business domains, and staging copies. Free Hyvä Theme keys go one per domain, up to 5 per account. For a new store, click “Add a license” in the Hyvä Portal and enter its domain, or buy Hyvä Commerce. Moving an existing store to a new domain uses “Edit domain” instead.
