Does Hyvä offer a trial or sandbox licence?

Hyvä does not offer a free trial or sandbox license for any of its paid products. For the core frontend, you no longer need one. Hyvä Theme became free and open source on 10 November 2025, and you can install it on any local or staging Magento 2 store today. Evaluating the paid add-ons takes a different route, covered below.

What changed in November 2025?

Before 10 November 2025, Hyvä Theme was a paid product. The usual advice back then was to buy a license and rely on the 30-day refund to evaluate it. From version 1.4.0, Hyvä Theme ships free under the OSL 3.0 and AFL 3.0 licenses, the same dual license Magento Open Source uses.

The refund workaround now applies only to Hyvä’s paid products: Hyvä Checkout, Hyvä Commerce, Hyvä Enterprise, and Hyvä UI. Any article that tells you to buy a Hyvä Theme license for testing predates this change.

Can you test Hyvä Theme for free?

Yes. Hyvä Theme is free to install on any Magento 2 store, including local and staging environments. Create an account at hyva.io, claim a free key in the Hyvä Portal, and install the theme through Composer like any other package. Individual accounts can hold up to 5 free Hyvä Theme keys. Agency partners share a pool of 50.

Hyvä can disable free Hyvä Theme keys that sit unused for a long time, or where it suspects abuse. That’s fine for a sandbox. Keep an eye on any test key that ends up in a production deploy.

Once Hyvä Theme runs on staging, you can do everything a trial would normally cover. Check which of your extensions have Hyvä compatibility modules. Add the Tailwind build to your deployment pipeline. Then run Lighthouse against your current Luma frontend on your own catalogue.

Is there a free trial for Hyvä Checkout or Hyvä Commerce?

No. Hyvä offers no free trial or evaluation access for Hyvä Checkout, Hyvä Commerce, or any other paid Hyvä product. The Hyvä Checkout product page states this directly. The table below shows where each Hyvä product stands.

Hyvä Checkout also needs Hyvä Theme installed before it will run, per the Hyvä Checkout installation docs. That makes the free theme the natural first step for any checkout evaluation.

How can you evaluate a paid Hyvä product before committing?

The 30-day refund is the closest thing Hyvä offers to a trial. Per the Hyvä license agreement, first-time purchases are refundable within 30 days, no questions asked. Yearly renewals of update and support plans for Hyvä Commerce, Hyvä Checkout, and Hyvä Enterprise are non-refundable.

To get the most out of Hyvä’s 30-day refund window:

• Install the paid product on staging. One Hyvä license covers a single production installation plus unlimited staging and development environments for the same business.
• Line up your payment and shipping modules before you buy. A Hyvä Checkout test mostly comes down to whether those integrations work, so you want the full 30 days for them.
• Agencies can buy Hyvä Commerce for testing and transfer it to a client later, according to the Hyvä Commerce FAQ. One Hyvä license can’t serve several clients, so each customer needs its own.

The sensible way to evaluate Hyvä is theme first, paid products second. Get Hyvä Theme working on staging with your real extensions.
