Who created Hyvä and who maintains it today?

Willem Wigman created Hyvä theme in 2020. He’s a Dutch Magento developer. He built it to replace Magento’s default Luma frontend with something faster and simpler. Today, hyva.io maintains it, the company Wigman founded. Vinai Kopp serves as Technical Director and Partner. A network of certified partner agencies also builds Hyvä-compatible extensions.

Why Wigman created Hyvä theme

Luma’s reliance on RequireJS and KnockoutJS made Magento storefronts slow and hard to touch without deep frontend expertise. Wigman rebuilt the frontend around Tailwind CSS and Alpine.js instead, cutting most of the JavaScript overhead out entirely. The name is Finnish for “good,” matching the project’s original pitch: a plain, working replacement rather than a full architectural rewrite. Who maintains Hyvä theme now

Hyvä stopped being a one-person project a while ago. Wigman still leads it, but Vinai Kopp holds the Technical Director and Partner role, focused on developer experience, tooling, and education. Below that sits a tiered partner program: agencies like Meetanshi and MageComp hold certified status and build most of the Hyvä-compatible extensions on the market. Thousands of live Magento 2 stores now run Hyvä in production, not just as a demo theme.

The license changed in late 2025

Hyvä Theme required a paid, per-domain license for most of its history. In November 2025, Hyvä Theme became free and open source under OSL3 and AFL3 licensing. If you evaluated Hyvä a few years ago and ruled it out over cost, that objection no longer applies.

Hyvä Commerce widened the scope

In July 2025, the same company launched Hyvä Commerce on top of the original theme. It bundles Hyvä Theme, Hyvä Checkout, UI Components, a CMS with live preview and scheduling, a redesigned Admin Panel, and built-in image optimization. “Hyvä” can now refer to either the free open source theme alone, or the full Hyvä Commerce suite. Worth clarifying which one someone means before scoping a project around it.
