Why are Hyvä Checkout support and updates billed separately from the license?

Why does Hyvä charge for Checkout updates but not Hyvä Theme?
The answer sits in the official Hyvä Checkout FAQ. By Hyvä’s account, Hyvä Theme updates arguably deserved a fee too. The company kept Theme updates free to protect community goodwill. For Hyvä Checkout, it says update frequency and quality matter much more. The fee lets Hyvä put more resources into the product.

Built from scratch, Hyvä Checkout runs on Magewire, Alpine.js, and Tailwind CSS. According to the same FAQ page, most standard Magento payment and shipping integrations don’t work out of the box. Someone has to build compatibility for each one, and that work keeps coming:
- Magento and PHP releases: the feature history shows Hyvä Checkout 1.1.x adding Magento 2.4.7 and PHP 8.3 support. If your access ended before a release like that shipped, you can’t download it.
- Payment integrations: Hyvä lists PayPal, Mollie, Stripe, Adyen, Braintree, and Payplug as supported payment methods. New gateway requests go onto Hyvä’s public Checkout Integration Tracker.
What happens if you don’t renew Hyvä Checkout support?
A lapsed Hyvä Checkout support plan freezes your upgrade path. You keep the versions released up to 12 months after purchase, and nothing newer.
A Magento upgrade can depend on a newer Hyvä Checkout release. For example, Hyvä Checkout only added Magento 2.4.7 support in its 1.1.x releases.
Can agencies use one Hyvä Checkout plan for several clients?
No. Each Hyvä Checkout support plan is tied to one license, and each client needs its own license. Trade-ins follow the same rule: a paid Checkout license counts toward Hyvä Commerce only for the same merchant and domain.
Is Hyvä Commerce a better deal than renewing Hyvä Checkout?
Hyvä Commerce costs €3,000 a year, which is 12 times the standalone €250 Checkout renewal. That only pays off if you’ll use the CMS, Admin Dashboard, and other tools Hyvä Commerce adds. Adobe Commerce stores need Hyvä Enterprise instead, because Hyvä Commerce runs on Magento Open Source and Mage-OS only.
