Which Magento or Adobe Commerce version should I be running right now?

The Magento version to run right now is Adobe Commerce 2.4.9 (Magento Open Source 2.4.9), released May 2026. If your extensions haven’t confirmed 2.4.9 compatibility yet, run 2.4.8-p5 in the meantime. Versions 2.4.5 and 2.4.6 lost Adobe’s standard support on August 11, 2026, which puts stores still on them in a limited window to migrate before it closes for good.

Magento Open Source is the free edition. Adobe Commerce is the paid edition, formerly called Magento Commerce. The version guidance below applies to both unless a section says otherwise.

Magento version to run right now: support timeline from 2.4.4 to 2.4.9

Quick answer

The Magento version to run right now depends on where you’re starting from. New builds and stores on 2.4.7 or 2.4.8 should target 2.4.9 once their extensions confirm compatibility, or stay on 2.4.8-p5 in the meantime. Stores on 2.4.5 or 2.4.6 are in a one-time security-only transitional period that Adobe describes as migration time, not a place to stay long-term. Adobe Commerce Cloud customers on unsupported versions face a separate deadline: Adobe suspends traffic to unsupported Cloud environments starting June 1, 2027.

Current Magento version support status

Check your exact version against this table rather than last year’s advice. Two of these support windows closed in the last month alone, per Adobe’s own software lifecycle policy.

Which Magento version to run right now, based on your situation

Starting a new build

Go with 2.4.9. If a key extension hasn’t confirmed 2.4.9 compatibility yet, build on 2.4.8-p5 and plan the move once your vendors catch up.

Already on 2.4.7 or 2.4.8

Keep current with the monthly isolated security patches on your existing line, and start extension compatibility testing for 2.4.9 now so the eventual upgrade is planned rather than forced on you by a deadline.

Still on 2.4.5 or 2.4.6

Both versions are past standard support, and the security-only transitional period only covers isolated fixes for actively exploited vulnerabilities, nothing else. Adobe’s own guidance calls this window migration time rather than a support tier. Target 2.4.8 if you want a smaller jump, or go straight to 2.4.9 if your extension stack already supports it. A Magento upgrade from 2.4.5 or 2.4.6 to 2.4.8 typically runs two to six weeks: extension audit, compatibility testing, staging validation.

On Adobe Commerce Cloud

Adobe stops maintaining Cloud environments running unsupported versions starting June 1, 2027, and will suspend traffic to them. That date is closer than it sounds once you factor in a real upgrade timeline.

One thing that applies no matter what version you’re on

Adobe released an out-of-cycle hotfix, APSB26-146, for CVE-2026-75650, which is being actively exploited. It ships outside the regular monthly patch cycle, and like other isolated patches, Adobe provides it only as a patch file rather than a Composer package, so it has to be applied directly. Apply it before anything else on this page.

Adobe Commerce security patches are non-cumulative, so they have to be applied in release order. If you’ve fallen a few patches behind, that sequencing is the detail that trips people up. The Magento version to run right now is 2.4.9 or 2.4.8-p5 if you have a choice, and an active upgrade plan if you don’t.
