Which PHP versions does each Magento release line support?

Magento PHP version compatibility changes with every release line: 2.4.4 and 2.4.5 both run on PHP 8.1, 2.4.6 picks up PHP 8.2 alongside 8.1, 2.4.7 moves to PHP 8.2 and 8.3, and 2.4.8 supports PHP 8.3 and 8.4. The current release, 2.4.9, breaks from that overlap pattern and requires PHP 8.5 on its own. Adobe Commerce and Magento Open Source share these same requirements at every line.

Quick Answer

  • Magento 2.4.4: PHP 8.1 only. End of life.
  • Magento 2.4.5: PHP 8.1 only. End of life.
  • Magento 2.4.6: PHP 8.1 or 8.2. End of life.
  • Magento 2.4.7: PHP 8.2 or 8.3. Supported.
  • Magento 2.4.8: PHP 8.3 or 8.4. Supported.
  • Magento 2.4.9: PHP 8.5 only. Supported, current release.

Why one release line often supports two PHP versions

Adobe overlaps two PHP versions per line on purpose: Magento 2.4.7 takes both 8.2 and 8.3, Magento 2.4.8 takes both 8.3 and 8.4. That overlap gives you time to move your server to the newer PHP version before the older one drops out of support, instead of forcing a PHP jump and a Magento jump on the same day.

Magento 2.4.9 does not follow that pattern. It supports PHP 8.5 only, so an upgrade to 2.4.9 needs PHP 8.5 in place first, not a range to pick from.

One edge case worth knowing: Magento 2.4.7 will still accept PHP 8.1 while an upgrade is actively in progress. That’s not the same as being supported for production use. Once the upgrade completes, 8.1 is not a version you should be running 2.4.7 on day to day.

What running an EOL line actually costs you

Magento 2.4.4, 2.4.5, and 2.4.6 have all reached end of life. No more security patches from Adobe on any of them, regardless of which PHP version you’re running underneath. Magento installs are a known automated-attack target, so this is a live exposure on any store still on these lines.

Before you bump your PHP version

Jumping PHP versions inside the same Magento release only works within that line’s supported range. Watch for PHP 8.2’s dynamic property deprecation in particular: it affects Magento core on anything before 2.4.6, and it trips up a lot of third-party extensions that declare properties dynamically. Run a compatibility scan against your installed extensions before moving PHP versions, not after.

If you’re still on Magento 2.4.6 or earlier

On Magento 2.4.7, 2.4.8, or 2.4.9, this is a quick check: confirm your server’s PHP version sits inside that line’s supported range and move on. On 2.4.6 or earlier, it isn’t really a PHP question. It’s an upgrade question, since you need to move to a supported Magento release line rather than swap PHP versions underneath the one you already have. Run php -v against your hosting environment, then match it against Adobe’s official PHP requirements for your release line before planning anything. That’s the full picture of Magento PHP version compatibility across 2.4.4 through 2.4.9.
