How does Shopware licensing and revenue share actually work?

Shopware does not take a percentage of your sales. That’s the part people usually get wrong when they hear “revenue share” attached to it. What actually happens is two unrelated things get lumped together in people’s heads: a tiered software license priced against your store’s gross merchandise value (GMV), and a Fair Usage Policy that pushes free Community Edition stores onto a paid plan once they cross a revenue line. Payment processing is a third, completely separate cost, and it’s billed by your payment provider, not Shopware.

Quick Answer

  • Shopware does not take a percentage of your sales.
  • Community Edition is free (MIT license), capped at €1 million annual GMV.
  • Rise starts from €600/month, Evolve from €2,400/month, Beyond from around €6,500/month.
  • The Fair Usage Policy, effective March 24, 2025, forces an upgrade past the €1M GMV threshold.
  • Payment processing fees are billed separately by your gateway, not Shopware.

What are the Shopware Rise, Evolve, and Beyond editions?

Shopware 6 is one free, open-source core with three commercial subscriptions layered on top. The old Community/Professional/Enterprise naming is gone. So is the option to buy a perpetual license on any paid tier. You subscribe, monthly or annually, full stop.

EditionStarting priceWhat it’s for
CommunityFree (MIT license)Self-hosted core: catalog, orders, checkout, basic CMS. Capped at €1M annual GMV.
RiseFrom €600/monthEntry commercial tier for growing B2C stores that have outgrown Community.
EvolveFrom €2,400/monthAdds native B2B Components: company accounts, approval workflows, budgets.
BeyondFrom around €6,500/monthEnterprise tier. Multi-inventory, premium support, quoted individually.

None of the paid tiers are flat rates. Shopware’s own pricing FAQ says plan cost depends on GMV and individual business factors, which means the numbers above are floors. A store doing €5 million a year on Rise pays more than a store doing €600,000 on the same tier, even though both are technically “on Rise.” Community to Rise is a self-service upgrade inside the Shopware Account, a few clicks. Evolve and Beyond are not self-service. Expect a sales call and a contract, so start that conversation earlier than you think you need to.

Does Shopware take a percentage of my sales?

There’s no take rate here. Shopware doesn’t keep a slice of individual orders the way some SaaS platforms do. What people are really describing when they say “revenue share” is the Fair Usage Policy: a GMV ceiling on the free tier, not a per-sale cut. Since March 24, 2025, Community Edition stores have had to report annual GMV to Shopware, and any store over €1 million a year has to move to Rise, Evolve, or Beyond to keep buying and updating extensions through the Shopware Store.

The store itself doesn’t stop working if you skip the upgrade. It’s open source, so the code keeps running. What you lose is access to new plugins and updates on the ones you already have. If your GMV is climbing toward €1 million, get the upgrade scheduled before you actually cross it. Doing it on your own timeline, against your fiscal year, beats doing it after the fact once your Store access has already been cut off and you’re negotiating from a worse position.

Are payment processing fees part of my Shopware license?

None of the license numbers above touch payment processing. Whatever gateway you connect, PayPal, Stripe, Mollie, or something else, bills its own transaction fees directly. Usually a percentage plus a small fixed amount per transaction, and that rate is set by the provider, not Shopware. Rates differ by provider and by card type, so pull current numbers from the gateway itself when you’re budgeting. These move independently of whatever Shopware plan you’re on.

How does Shopware plugin licensing work?

Extensions from the Shopware Store are rented, not bought. You pay an ongoing subscription per plugin. Stop paying and you lose the right to keep using it, not just future updates, the extension itself. Budget for plugins the way you’d budget for hosting: it doesn’t end at launch.

Which Shopware edition should I choose?

Under €1 million in annual GMV, Community Edition usually covers the platform cost entirely, and your real budget line is development and hosting, not licensing. Get close to that €1 million mark, or need B2B account features, and Rise or Evolve stops being optional. See our Shopware development services for how edition selection and migration planning actually get scoped against your numbers rather than the published starting prices.

Shopware charges for software tiers and gates its free tier by revenue. It does not take a cut of what you sell. Keep the license, the €1 million GMV threshold, and your payment provider’s transaction fees as three separate numbers on your spreadsheet, not one blended “Shopware cost,” and revisit the edition question again once your GMV starts closing in on that threshold.
