What is included in Shopware Community Edition versus the Commercial plugin?
Shopware ships as one free, open-source core plus a paid layer on top. Community Edition is the core, and it’s a genuinely complete commerce platform on its own, not a trial or a stripped-down demo. The Commercial extension is how Shopware delivers everything beyond that core. It isn’t a plugin you buy separately. It arrives automatically the moment you subscribe to Rise, Evolve, or Beyond, and each of those three plans unlocks a different slice of it. The practical question most people actually have isn’t “what’s the difference” in the abstract, it’s whether their specific store needs what sits behind that paywall or not, and that depends on the features below.
Quick answer
Shopware Community Edition is free and MIT-licensed, and includes product and variant management, the Shopping Experiences page builder, Rule Builder, base Flow Builder, roles and permissions, and full API access, with no product limits or transaction fees. The Commercial extension is bundled into three paid plans: Rise (from €600/month) adds AI Copilot and returns management, Evolve (from €2,400/month) adds B2B Components and Advanced Search 2.0, and Beyond (custom pricing) adds multi-inventory, subscriptions, and customer-specific pricing. Shops earning over roughly €1 million in annual GMV must move to a paid plan to keep core account access, under Shopware’s Fair Usage Policy.
Shopware Community Edition is the free, open-source core of Shopware 6. The Commercial extension is the paid layer bundled into Rise, Evolve, and Beyond that adds B2B, AI, and advanced operations features.
What Community Edition includes
CE is open source under the MIT license. Download the source from GitHub, run it however you want, including commercially, with no artificial product limits and no transaction fees baked into the core.
- Product, variant, and category management
- Shopping Experiences, the drag-and-drop page builder
- Rule Builder and base Flow Builder automation
- Sales channels, customer groups, promotions
- Roles and permissions, SEO tools, search, cross-selling, product reviews
- Full REST API and the plugin and app ecosystem
Support runs through the community forum and documentation, not a Shopware ticket queue. And CE doesn’t run inside Shopware’s managed cloud. You self-host it, or a certified hosting partner does it for you.
What the Commercial extension adds, by plan
The Commercial extension is what unlocks paid-tier features once a store moves to Rise, Evolve, or Beyond. Each plan inherits everything below it, so Beyond gets the full stack.
| Feature area | Rise | Evolve | Beyond |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI Copilot (content, descriptions, review summaries, translation) | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Returns management | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Flow Builder webhook actions | — | ✓ | ✓ |
| Advanced Search 2.0 | — | ✓ | ✓ |
| B2B Components (quotes, budgets, order lists, sales reps) | — | ✓ | ✓ |
| Multi-inventory | — | — | ✓ |
| Subscriptions | — | — | ✓ |
| Customer-specific pricing | — | — | ✓ |
| Digital Sales Rooms | — | — | ✓ |
Rise starts around €600 a month, Evolve around €2,400, Beyond is custom quoted. All excluding VAT. Shopware confirms the final number against your GMV and project scope, so treat these as starting points, not what you’ll actually pay.
The GMV catch
Shopware’s Fair Usage Policy forces a move to a paid plan once a CE store passes roughly €1 million in annual GMV, whether or not you actually want any Commercial feature. Miss this and you lose access to core account and store services, not just the nice-to-haves. Worth checking your growth trajectory against this now, not after you’ve hit the number.
Which one should you run
CE fits if your business runs on standard B2C checkout, product, and content management, and your team can build the occasional extra as a custom plugin. Plenty of small and mid-sized stores never outgrow it. A paid plan earns its cost once you need B2B ordering workflows, multi-warehouse inventory, subscriptions, or the AI content and search tooling. Building those from scratch as custom code almost always costs more over time than the plan does. Still unsure what your roadmap actually needs? A technical audit against your current catalog and customer base usually settles it faster than reading feature tables. See how we approach that in Shopware development.
CE is a real, complete commerce platform, not a stripped-down trial. The Commercial extension is where the B2B depth, AI tooling, and operational extras like multi-inventory and subscriptions live. Pick based on what your roadmap actually demands, not what looks impressive in a comparison table.
